The Fate of the Republic

Frost blankets the brown winter grass,

Light fog drifts over the bay.

The dreary gray that lingered so long

Now yields to a brighter day.

A day when I feel a calming peace

For whatever may lie ahead,

But I know these feelings are fleeting

And soon may give way to dread.

How can I capture them, make them part

Of my spirit so weary and worn,

Renewed each day with newness and hope

Like on the day I was born?

Innocence wanes as life unfolds

In a stark reality

Of hopes long faded, dreams long dead

And never more to be.

The worth of all I cherish,

The tenets I hold dear,

Eternal truths have turned to lies

That fill my heart with fear.

So many deceived walk in darkness

Not knowing the path they tread

Leads not to life abundant

But to bondage and sorrow instead.

Gratitude for precious gifts

Bought with patriots’ blood

Has turned to scorn and ridicule

Of priceless rights once loved.

Rewards of self-sufficiency,

Of independent thought

Have faded in the hearts of men

For youth, they’re all for naught.

And what of history’s lessons

Of the inevitable consequence

When mankind turns its back on God

In haughty insolence?

The end of all we once held dear

Looms like a cold, dark cloud.

The light of truth that saves us,

We dare not speak out loud.

The cost may be too great to pay:

Our honor, our fortunes, our lives.

Are you willing to offer all that you have

For our birthright to survive?

Hold fast to what matters with all your might,

With the truth as your guide, be strong.

May this blessed Republic be restored

And its legacy of honor live long!
